Oilers flag football holds at No. 5 in the nation in USA Today Super 25

Huntington Beach (20-3) keeps its national top-five spot in the Week 7 Super 25 without playing a game, while MaxPreps ranks the Oilers No. 4 nationally and No. 4 in California.

The Huntington Beach Oilers are holding their ground among the nation's best. The girls flag football team stayed at No. 5 in the USA Today Sports Super 25 national rankings for Week 7, published Oct. 7, keeping Surf City in the national top five without taking the field.

The Oilers (20-3) "did not play this week," according to USA Today, while the top of the board barely moved: the top ten did not budge at all, and Huntington Beach held the same No. 5 spot it earned a week earlier. JSerra Catholic of San Juan Capistrano remains No. 1 at 22-0 after beating Sierra Canyon and Mater Dei.

Crosstown company stayed close. Orange Lutheran sits one spot ahead of the Oilers at No. 4 (16-3) after bouncing back from its Mater Dei loss with an 18-6 win over Santa Margarita, and Newport Harbor checks in at No. 7 (18-4) after a 34-0 rout of Fountain Valley, with Scarlett Guyser throwing for 174 yards and three touchdowns.

Huntington Beach's case for the top five was built on head-to-head evidence. In the Week 5 rankings, the Oilers jumped into the national top five by beating Newport Harbor 18-6, with quarterback Roxie Shaia throwing for 227 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers, "leaping over the Sailors and into the upper echelon of the Super 25," as USA Today wrote.

By Week 6, the Oilers had run off 11 straight victories since an 8-7 loss on Sept. 12, a perfect 7-0 at home during the run. "Make that 11 straight victories for the Oilers since an 8-7 loss on Sept. 12," USA Today wrote at the time.

The computer rankings agree with the voters. MaxPreps' national girls flag football rankings, updated Oct. 5, list Huntington Beach at No. 4 with a 20-3-0 record, and the site's California board, updated Oct. 8, has the Oilers at 21-3-0 and No. 4 in the state behind JSerra Catholic, Orange Lutheran and Newport Harbor.
